Magnesium
What it is
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism and more. The common blood test measures serum magnesium.
Why it matters
Low magnesium can relate to cramps, fatigue and other symptoms, and interacts with other electrolytes. Serum magnesium does not always reflect total body stores, so results are interpreted with some caution.
What “optimal” looks like
A healthy sufficiency range applies. Because blood levels can look normal even when stores are low, clinicians consider symptoms and diet alongside the number.
This is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
