Liver

GGT (liver enzyme)

Also known as: gamma-glutamyl transferase, gamma GT

What it is

GGT is an enzyme found in the liver and bile ducts. It rises with a range of liver and biliary conditions and is notably sensitive to alcohol intake.

Why it matters

GGT is often used alongside ALT and ALP to help interpret a liver panel - for example, a raised ALP with a raised GGT points more toward the liver or bile ducts. It can also be nudged up by alcohol and some medications.

What “optimal” looks like

Lower within the healthy range is generally preferred. As with other liver enzymes, a mildly raised value is usually rechecked and read in the context of the full panel and your habits.

This is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
