Ferritin

What it is

Ferritin is the protein that stores iron, and its blood level is the standard way to estimate iron stores. It is also an “acute-phase” protein, so inflammation can raise it independently of iron.

Why it matters

Low ferritin can indicate depleted iron stores (a common cause of fatigue), while high ferritin may reflect iron overload or ongoing inflammation. Because inflammation confounds it, ferritin is best read with context.

What “optimal” looks like

There is a healthy middle range; both low and high ends can matter, and healthy ranges differ by sex. Interpretation alongside inflammation markers and symptoms is important.

This is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
