Homocysteine
What it is
Homocysteine is an amino acid processed with the help of folate and vitamins B12 and B6. When those pathways are under-supplied, homocysteine can rise.
Why it matters
Elevated homocysteine is associated with cardiovascular and cognitive risk in research, and often reflects B-vitamin status. It is one input among many rather than a stand-alone verdict.
What “optimal” looks like
Lower within the healthy range is generally favoured, and levels often relate to folate/B12. Your clinician considers it together with those vitamins and your overall picture.
This is general information, not medical advice or a diagnosis. Always discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
